Sermon title: The Heart of Worship
Sermon text: Exodus 34:1-14
Worship can be a beautiful thing. It can also be the source of much unpleasantness, even harm. Many of us have experienced it – worship that feels coercive, performative, or just plain fake.
Far from a comprehensive blueprint for worship, the story of the golden calf shows us the many ways worship can go horribly wrong. And in doing so, it indirectly reveals one of the core functions of worship: telling the truth about God to discover the deepest truth about ourselves and our world.
What is the heart of worship? Here is the beginning of one answer we will explore together: where universal human longing meets God’s love for the whole wide world.
